Project Summary

This project involved a two-phase effort: (1) historic masonry restoration and (2) roofing and waterproofing replacement across the Virginia War Memorial’s upper roof, bell tower, plaza deck, grand stairways, and lower deck.

The roofing and waterproofing phase included:

• Removal and disposal of all existing roofing and waterproofing systems.

• Installation of a built-up Modified Bitumen roofing system on the upper roof and bell tower roof.

• Installation of Pumadeq liquid-applied waterproofing on the upper plaza, grand staircase, and lower deck surfaces.

• Drainage correction, including placement of a new topping slab to re-slope surfaces and ensure positive drainage to 14 roof drains.

• High-elevation roofing at heights up to 220 feet on the bell tower, requiring specialized access, engineered scaffolding, and rigorous safety planning.

• Detailed roofing work around historic features, including hand-applied waterproofing in tight and irregular roof sections and delicate installation around the bell tower’s historic bell and architectural elements.

This scope demonstrates Atlantic’s ability to execute complete roofing system replacements across multiple elevations, integrate liquid-applied and built-up roofing systems, correct systemic drainage failures, and perform specialized detailing in and around historic fabric. The combination of roofing and masonry scopes required disciplined sequencing and coordination with the architect and owner to protect and restore sensitive features while ensuring watertight performance.
