Project Summary

Atlantic partnered with Biscayne Contractors and the Smithsonian Institution to execute a full waterproofing and stone restoration program within the Freer Gallery of Art’s interior courtyard in Washington, DC.

Scope Highlights:

  • Installed 5,000 SF of cold-fluid applied waterproofing, primer, vapor barrier, rigid insulation, and drainage board.
  • Performed 8,000 CY of overburden demolition and concrete scarification for adhesion.
  • Restored and reset 212 historic stones and executed 5,000 LF of repointing.
  • Completed detailed repairs: dutchman inserts, Jahn patching, crack sealing, and new concrete footings/topping slabs.
  • Integrated PUMA waterproofing at the historic fountain and scuppers with stainless counterflashing.

All materials were craned into and out of the fully enclosed museum courtyard using a 155-ton crane, requiring precision planning and coordination to avoid any disruption to operations or DC traffic.
Atlantic implemented a robust Quality Control Program - including ELD and 24-hour flood testing - and all technicians received on-site Kemper manufacturer training. The project successfully blended modern waterproofing systems with historic preservation, maintaining full museum operations and protecting priceless architectural finishes.
