Project Summary
Atlantic performed the full exterior restoration of Mahan Hall, a Beaux-Arts landmark building located within the U.S. Naval Academy’s historic district in Annapolis, Maryland. Originally constructed in the early 1900s, the building serves as a central academic and ceremonial facility for midshipmen and required meticulous coordination to preserve its historic character while remaining fully occupied throughout construction.
The project scope included complete façade cleaning, 100% repointing of brick, granite, and terracotta, selective brick and terracotta replacement, lead tee and flashing repairs, and custom color and glaze matching for historic materials. Atlantic developed bespoke mortar colors for each elevation to match adjacent historic structures (Maury and Sampson Halls), ensuring seamless visual integration.
Due to the project’s success and craftsmanship quality, NAVFAC expanded the scope to include three additional elevations, terracotta ornament replication, and restoration of the building’s clock tower. Work was completed under strict NAVFAC preservation standards, with all trades badged and coordinated to avoid disruption to ongoing Naval Academy operations.
