Project Summary
Atlantic performed the comprehensive stone and masonry restoration of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial’s portico roof under the oversight of the National Park Service and design architect GWWO. The work included removal, repair, and reinstallation of the monument’s large marble roof tiles and rib stones to facilitate re-roofing and waterproofing activities while preserving the building’s historic integrity.
Using a combination of gantry systems, chainfalls, and crane operations, Atlantic carefully removed and cataloged each of the 315 marble roof stones -some measuring over six feet in length - before resetting them to their exact original positions. The team completed full-scale condition surveys, documentation, and shop drawings, ensuring precise restoration sequencing and alignment.
The restoration scope also encompassed marble spall and crack repairs, Dutchman installations, structural pinning up to 48 inches, and 100% repointing of the building envelope, including the dome, drum, entablature, and retaining walls. All cleaning, lead tee installation, and injection grouting were executed under strict preservation protocols within one of the nation’s most visible and historically significant landmarks.
Completed on schedule, the Jefferson Memorial restoration exemplified Atlantic’s ability to manage complex logistics, precision stonework, and preservation-grade craftsmanship within an active national monument setting.
